slideshow JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Chimpanzees at a sanctuary for the animals in eastern South Africa pulled an American working there into their enclosure, bit him severely and dragged him nearly a half mile (kilometer), according to a paramedic official and local media reports.

The man was leading a tour group at the Jane Goodall Institute Chimpanzee Eden near Nelspruit, some 180 miles (300 kilometers) from Johannesburg, Thursday when two chimpanzees grabbed his feet and pulled him under a fence into their enclosure, Jeffrey Wicks of the Netcare911 medical emergency services company said in a statement obtained by The Associated Press on Friday.

Mediclinic Nelspruit, the hospital where he was taken, said Friday he was in intensive care in critical condition after undergoing surgery Thursday.

The man had "multiple and severe bite wounds" and was dragged nearly a kilometer by the chimpanzees, Wicks said.

Beeld, a South African newspaper, reported Friday that the man was an American researcher who was giving tourists a lecture at the time of the attack. The tourists were escorted to safety by staff members as the chimpanzees dragged the man out of their enclosure, Beeld reported. The sanctuary's director fired into the air to scare the chimps away from the man, and then chased the animals back into their enclosure. Beeld reported the man lost part of an ear and parts of his fingers.

The Associated Press did not immediately get responses to phone calls and an email seeking comment from officials at the institute and its sanctuary.

The international institute founded by renowned primatologist Jane Goodall opened the sanctuary in 2006. It is a home to chimpanzees, which are not native to South Africa, rescued from further north in Africa. Some of the chimpanzees at the sanctuary lost their parents to poachers in countries where they are hunted for their meat, and others were held in captivity in cruel conditions as little more than roadside attractions.

In the United States this week, lawyers for a Connecticut woman who was attacked in 2009 by a friend's chimpanzee filed papers accusing state officials of failing to seize the animal before the mauling despite a staff member's warning that it was dangerous. The chimpanzee ripped off the woman's nose, lips, eyelids and hands before being killed by police, and the woman was blinded and has had a face transplant.

3 cos. fined $75M for selling China military tech

(CBS News) United Technologies Corp. and two of its subsidiaries Thursday pleaded guilty to illegally shipping defense parts to China for use in building China's first military attack helicopter.

UTC, Pratt and Whitney Canada (PWC), and Hamilton Sundstrand agreed to pay $75 million to settle criminal charges, reports CBS News correspondent Bob Orr.

In a case brought by U.S. prosecutors in Connecticut, United Technologies was accused of shipping parts for the Z-10 helicopter in violation of a 1989 ban on defense exports put in place after Tiananmen Square.

The Justice Department also accused the defense contractors of essentially hiding the shipments by making false statements and belated disclosures to U.S. government officials.

The Z-10 which went into service in 2009 is a gunship armed with 30 mm cannons, anti-tank weapons and air-to-air missiles.

The government alleges that the U.S. contractors were attempting to curry favor with Chinese defense officials in hopes of gaining entree to China's much more profitable civilian helicopter market, potentially worth up to $2 billion.

From the $75 million fine, "roughly $20.7 million of this sum is to be paid to the Justice Department. The remaining $55 million is payable to the State Department as part of a separate consent agreement to resolve outstanding export issues, including those related to the Z-10. Up to $20 million of this penalty can be suspended if applied by UTC to remedial compliance measures," the Justice Department said in a press release.

The Justice Department said that while China was developing the Z-10 helicopter, PWC sold them the engines for it, which operated on specialized software made in the U.S.

PWC had attempted to skirt the U.S. ban on military technology by claiming they already sold China the engines for use in commercial helicopters.

Assistant Secretary Shapiro, of the State Department's Bureau of Political and Military Affairs, said, "Today's $75 million settlement with United Technologies Corporation sends a clear message: willful violators of U.S. arms export control regulations will be pursued and punished. The successful resolution of this case is the byproduct of the tireless work of our compliance officers and highlights the relentless commitment of the State Department to protect sensitive American technologies from being illegally transferred."

New Miami Women's Business Network Debuts June 27 | PRLog

PRLog (Press Release) - Jun 25, 2012 -
MIAMI, June 25, 2012 ?? Women's business coach Kay Richardson sees a need for more in-depth networking for women small business owners, women entrepreneurs and women professionals.
The first in a series of new networking events is scheduled for 6:00 to 8:00p.m. June 27 at the North Miami Total Wine Store, 14750 Biscayne Blvd. Monthly networking is one facet of a new group, Women in Business Events.
Richardson, owner of Freedom to Be Me, a women's business coaching firm, said she is often frustrated at networking events. Many, she said, are built primarily around passing out cards. "Even when businesswomen have an opportunity to present their business to those attending, each business owner typically gets only 30 to 60 seconds. My experience building two successful businesses is that networking needs to go deeper to begin to develop relationships. This networking event for Miami women entrepreneurs will allow each entrepreneur two minutes to present her business," she said.
A yearly $99 Women in Business Events membership includes monthly women-only small business networking events, business resources and a business profile listed on the members website.
"By networking my business has flourished and catapulted me to interact with local businesses that I might not have patronized otherwise. I want to help other women entrepreneurs create the kinds of business and personal relationships through this way of networking," Richardson said.
Richardson built an ergonomics consulting business before deciding that her passion was to help other women build successful businesses. In addition to being the CEO of Women in Business Events and Freedom to Be Me, she volunteers as a motivational speaker and mentor for teen single mothers. "That's where I started out ten years ago," she said. She recently founded Another-Chance, a non-profit organization to help provide college scholarships and mentoring toward entrepreneurship for teen single moms.

Filing an incorporation record can be pricey and annoying. Carrying this out job by yourself may expose you to red tape along with other kinds of bureaucracy. Because of this, company owners wishing to make the process easier seek out the expertise of organizations on the web to assist them with their Delaware corporation method.

Before getting the services from these online firms, consider the following aspects in their business:
- Make sure they help their clients with the process ? This includes letting them know if the name they plan to use is still available. They should also inform you exactly about the requirements to make the process of incorporation go smoothly. It also comes in the form of informing you about the amount you have to pay their services. This allows you to have a clear idea on how much to spend.
- Find out if they are updated with the recent published legal requirements for incorporation ? Laws and requirements change all the time so it is important the firm is updated about legal requirements. This ensures they are assisting their clients correctly and conveniently.

The hours at the post office in Sugar Hill have recently been cut back to 30 minutes a day, down from a few hours. The post office is open from 10:15 to 10:45 each morning.

New Hampshire's two U.S. senators have written a letter urging the U.S. Postal Service to hold a community meeting in the northern New Hampshire town so that residents, government officials and business owners can ask questions and offer their thoughts on the future of retail postal service there.

PFT: T.O. wants $160K, retraction from Wranglers

Detroit Lions v Denver BroncosGetty Images

Safety Brian Dawkins, who retired earlier this year after 16 seasons of pro football, played most of his career before the NFL became sensitive to the long-term consequences of concussions.

With a lifetime of hits to the head in his rear-view mirror, Dawkins says he?s not worried about what may come.

?Concerns? ?I have some concerns, but worry? ?No,? Dawkins said on the Cover Two podcast with Steve Wyche and Jason Smith. ??I don?t worry about that. ?Down the road at some point, later on in life, if I do have to deal with some things at that time, then I have to deal with them. ?As of right now, I?m going to continue to enjoy life, continue to have a great time with my family and help those who I can help, ministry-wise, along the way.?

Even if health problems arise, Dawkins seems to acknowledge that it goes with the 100-by-53-yard territory he patrolled with reckless abandon and heartfelt zeal.

?I played this game a certain way,? Dawkins said. ??I played it with a passion, with fervor. ?I played with an aggression. ?I would not change those things. ?The only thing I would change is the helmet I wore. ?Technology is better.?

Current players would be wise to heed Dawkins on that point. ?For reasons ranging from weight to look to a stubborn resistance to anything different, guys fail to embrace new and improved ways to protect the contents of their craniums. ?That?s a significant part of the culture that the NFL must change.

And while Dawkins didn?t quit the game in order to protect himself from further harm, he seems to be relieved by the fact that he won?t have to think about where and how he?s hitting offensive players.

?I?m not going to say it?s one of the reasons, but . . . to be stepping away from the game now, not having to deal with that stuff, is a good thing,? Dawkins said. ?Guys today [are] trying to play that way and trying to understand that you still have to be able to control these territories but you know you?re probably going to get fined or get a flag because refs are told to err on the side of throwing the flag. ?You?re asking guys to play in the gray.?

White, black, gray, or any other shade, men like Dawkins will continue to find their way to the gridiron. ?And they?ll play hard. ?And they?ll accept the risks, of injury or fines or suspensions. ?And they?ll recognize that, once their careers end, any problems they may encounter later in life are part of the price they paid for their moments in the sun.
